Modular Studies Digital Humanities

The FAU Digital Humanities modular courses offer the opportunity to acquire subject-specific foundations and practical application knowledge in the field of digital humanities and social sciences and to complete the program with a certificate. This makes them perfectly suited for further qualification for the MA program Digital Humanities.

Students of all disciplines, those interested in studying, professionals, and seniors can enroll in the modular studies. Participants of the two-semester modular studies are regularly enrolled students. However, there is no entitlement to BaföG.

The modular studies consist of modules from the regular BA program Digital Humanities and Social Sciences, which have been combined into a new, interdisciplinary study program. The program aims at acquiring “Future Skills”, which are increasingly required in studies, research, and almost all professional fields, as part of a two-semester university study offering. Students and doctoral candidates gain an academic profile in both Digital Literacy and Data Literacy through this focus.

Successful completion is certified by an FAU certificate. It documents the skills acquired and is supplemented with a separate, graded performance overview.

Within the framework of the modular studies, participants gain basic and, based on individual interests, specialized skills in Digital Humanities. Depending on the chosen combination of modules, they acquire qualifications in digital methods and data-driven research methods within an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research landscape of the humanities, social sciences, and computer science, as well as a basic understanding of the current discourse on digitalization and the digital transformation in science and society.

The modular studies are aimed at:
  • High school graduates and prospective students who wish to gain an insight into the field of Digital Humanities before deciding on a regular course of study; earned credits can be applied to the BA program;
  • All FAU students who wish to acquire a specific additional qualification in Digital Literacy and Data Literacy alongside their degree programs (Bachelor’s, Master’s, teacher training);
  • BA graduates from related fields (university or technical university) who seek admission to the MA program Digital Humanities at FAU and need to further qualify in certain areas;
  • Students with alternative educational backgrounds;
  • Doctoral candidates and postdocs who need specific skills in research data, data literacy, and digital analysis methods for their research projects;
  • Students who wish to incorporate credits from regular study programs into the certificate program;
  • Individuals seeking to further their education in „Future Skills parallel to or after their professional career as part of lifelong learning.

The modular studies comprise 30 ECTS, which are acquired over two semesters (standard study duration, extendable to three semesters) through successful participation in lectures, seminars, and practical exercises from Digital Humanities and computer science. Module selection is discussed in academic advising and tailored individually according to prior knowledge and interests.

The content of the modules is divided into three areas:

  • DH fundamentals,
  • Computer science and mathematical fundamentals,
  • Specialization.

These three areas include a pool of modules from which an individual curriculum can be composed, depending on prior knowledge and desired focus, in consultation with academic advising.

Detailed and binding information on the curriculum can be found in the examination regulations and study plan.

Conceptual Modeling

Alternatively, you can take Secure Systems (only in the winter semester) or Introduction to Software Engineering (every semester).

All of these seminars can currently be found in the course catalog of the Bachelor’s program in computer science. Until the adjustment of the study and examination regulations is completed, you must have the replacement seminars recognized.

The requirement is university entrance qualification to enroll at the university. Apart from the semester fee, no additional costs are incurred.
