We are delighted to share that Dr. Katrin Rohrbacher has joined the DHSS! Katrin is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the ‘Text and Language’ Group of Prof. Michaela Mahlberg! She completed her PhD in German Studies at McGill University, where she was advised by Prof. Andrew Piper. Her dissertation, Aspects of Space: Quantitative Approaches to Fictional Worlds, presents the first large-scale estimate of how “setting” as a narrative concept has evolved in fiction. The study contributes to the fields of computational narratology and digital literary studies by shedding new light on the embodied and interactive dimensions of setting in storytelling.

Katrin’s research interests are in Cultural Analytics and NLP, with a particular focus on the use of large language models (LLMs) to explore storytelling patterns, narrative form, and narrative communication.
